Abstract

The IBM 2810 XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 114 for machine types 2810and 2812 is an innovative, high-end, open disk system designed to helpreduce costs, simplify management and speed access to important data.IBM XIV Storage System Model 114 for machine types 2810 and 2812 is nowoffering the 3 Terabyte (TB) Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drivespopulated in the XIV interface and data modules.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 with software release 11.1 now includessupport for optional IBM XIV SSD Caching. This new feature is designedto provide a performance boost for Gen3 systems with more cache capacitythan existing DIMM RAM and the ability to serve up to 3x the performancefor OLTP workloads. With SSD caching, Gen3 with software release 11.1further strengthens its ability to provide consistent high performanceand enterprise functionality, along with low total cost of ownership(TCO) and ease of use. The enhancements in this release is intended toenable:

    Highlights

IBM XIV Storage Systems Gen3 is designed to provide ahigher-performing option in enterprise-class storage from the IBM XIVStorage System series. XIV Gen3 model 114 offers up to four times theperformance of previous generation systems and includes:

    • A virtualized grid-based array of storage devices
    • Up to 180 2 TB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives
    • Up to 161 TB of useable capacity in a single frame
    • Up to 24 ports of 8Gb Fibre Channel host connectivity
    • Up to 22 ports of 1Gb iSCSI host connectivity
    • Up to 360 GB of cache
    • High-performance InfiniBand interconnectivity
    • Multi-core processors
    • Advanced software functions:

        Description

The IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 represents the third generation of theIBM XIV series of storage systems and offers:

      • Ease of management: Ease of management that goes below thesurface, with a virtualized architecture, highly intuitive GUI, andclever implementation of role-based management all add up to create astreamlined user experience, with less administration.
      • High performance: A high-speed InfiniBand internalinterconnect, load balancing, use of all system resources, innovativecaching, and massive CPU power combine to support high performance.
      • Enhanced Connectivity: The IBM XIV Gen3 offers improvedhost connectivity with up to twenty-four 8Gbps Fibre Channel ports and upto twenty-two 1Gbps iSCSI host connectivity ports.
      • Reliability: High reliability and availability throughhardware redundancy, rapid rebuild times, automatic self-healing, andpreemptive, proactive support services.
      • Improved capacity usage: Efficient capacity utilizationfunctionality, including space-efficient snapshots and advanced thinprovisioning, helps support savings in capacity and cost, and lessadministration requirements.
      • High-Density Storage: Enterprise-class, high density SASdisk drives create increased physical space efficiencies. Using 2 TBdrives. XIV Gen3 provides 161 TB useable capacity in a single rack. Theability to store so much data in one system using fewer, large capacitydrives, as well as the use of multi-core processors, can help to reducepower and cooling expenses for a more energy-efficient solution.
      • Innovative Caching: Up to 360 GB of total system cachewith flexible and powerful cache implementation allows the XIV system toleverage large slots for reads while enabling it to manage a smaller slotsize for improved cache management and better performance.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 will be upgradeable to an SSD Cachingoption which is planned for the first half of 2012. The SSD cachingoption is being designed to provide up to 6 TB of fast read cache tosupport and up to a 90% reduction in I/O latency for random readworkloads.

      • Flexible Warranty: Configurations are available in bothone-and three-year warranty options.
      • Capacity on Demand Configurations: CoD configurations areavailable to provide a method to quickly provision new physical storageand can be ordered at any of the valid partially populated capacities.Up to three CoD modules can be over-provisioned. Contact your salesrepresentative for further details on CoD conditions.

        2 TB HDD modules

The IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 114 is now able to scale evenhigher in a single rack footprint.

The XIV line of storage products continues to provide the same greatease-of-management and reliability. Now, XIV is able to offer even morecapacity to support high-performance enterprise workloads.

The unique XIV architecture supports the use of high-density driveseven for high-performance enterprise environments. The new support of 3TB SAS drives allows more than 50% greater capacity than the 2 TB drivesand greater storage density per rack, which can help lower per-terabytecosts.

The following tables depict the configurations supported on the IBMXIV Storage System Gen3 with 3 TB SAS drives.

        3 TB HDD modules

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 with software release 11.1 Model 114 nowsupports SSD as read cache.

The availability of SSD caching brings an additional performance boostto IBM XIV Storage System Gen3. With SSD caching, the Gen3 with softwarerelease 11.1 further strengthens its ability to provide consistent highperformance and enterprise functionality for open system storage, alongwith low total cost of ownership (TCO) and ease of use.

The unit would be delivered fully tested but partiallydisassembled into several easily transported subassemblies. This featurewould allow racks to be safely transported on lower weight capacityelevators. At the installation site, the unit will be assembled andinstalled by IBM technicians. This feature will increase the machineinstallation time and should only be ordered if required when the machinehas 12 modules or more. This feature allows the removal of the topmodules (#12-15), then the top hat of the rack can be taken off to ensurethe height of the machine is reduced by 68 cm (15 in), so themachine is shorter and can fit into doors.
